Deforestation Crisis (Can the Earth Survive?) by Richard Spilsbury

Genre - NONFICTION

Summary –
This nonfiction book is very straightforward about the earth’s problems, mainly human impact.  The book discusses human behaviors and actions that are putting the earth’s survival in danger.  It also gives good suggestions of how we can improve the earth by minimizing our impact on the resources of the planet.

Teaching Points – This nonfiction literature is a well written, informative tool that can be used in a classroom.  Teachers can have students create posters of suggestions of ways to help the earth survive human effects and put them up around the community or classroom.  This book advocates for the protection of the earth through reducing human impact, just as teachers can promote students to advocate as well using information that they learn from this book.

Suggested Reading Level – Grades 2-5

Additional Resources – Video clips are a great tool to use in the classroom as an additional resource in lessons.  This clip is a creative (and short) video that gets to the bottom of earth’s “disease,” which is considered to be humans.  Please note, this video is for older children because it does contain one clip with a few cartoon animals dying.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bInZKTaNf2U&feature=related
